pH and ORP

pH is a measurement that indicates the level of alkalinity or acidity as measured on the pH scale. For example, a pH of 7 is neutral. A pH of 4 is acid (eg pop or distilled water), a pH of 9 is alkaline. More and more researchers and health practitioners understand the importance of balancing body pH to maintain good health. Ionization raises or lowers the pH in water and drinking alkaline ionized water can help you maintain this ever important balance.
Ionization also alters the water’s electrical properties. The way this is measured is through Oxidation Reduction Potential or ORP (redox) which is expressed in millivolts. ORP is a measure of antioxidant power.
A high ORP value, such as +380mv represents a highly oxidizing liquid, eg pop; a low ORP value, such as -280mv is indicative of a powerful antioxidant like fresh orange juice or alkaline ionized water.
What this means to you
Research shows that the ideal level for drinking alkaline water is between pH8.5 and pH9.5, with an ORP of -250mv. It is unimportant if an ionizer creates big -ORP numbers at really high levels of pH. For most people, water over a pH10 begins to acquire an unpleasant taste due to the heavy concentration of minerals. What is important is drinking water at the mildly alkaline levels of pH8.5 to pH9.5 with good -ORP values.
