Drinking Water the Ayurvedic Way

We all know that drinking plenty of clean, filtered water is good for our health but how does the temperature of that water have an impact?

Water is one of the essential elements of Ayurveda, one of the oldest systems of medicine that is based on the idea of balance in bodily systems. Drinking hot water during the day helps the body flush out waste products. Cold water is said to nourish while hot water is said to purify.

The Ayurvedic way to drink water is to, first off, sit down to drink (just as you should sit down to eat). Take sips, not full-glass chugs. Sip water throughout the day. If you chug too much water at once your body doesn’t actually absorb all of it. Most of it will run right through you. Drink at least room temperature water. Warm is even better.

With or without meals

Only sip a small amount of water with your meals. If you drink too much while you eat, your belly won’t have enough room for digestive action. Remember this rule: fill your stomach 50% with food, 25% with water, and leave 25% empty for the digestive juices and process. For the same reason, don’t drink loads of water before or after your meals.

The best time to drink

The best time to drink a large amount of water all at once is in the morning to cleanse the digestive tract and kidneys of the wastes that naturally accumulate during sleep. Start off with 1-2 cups of water, and work your way up to three cups every morning. Add a pinch of pink salt and a squeeze of lemon or lime for additional benefit. Ushapan is a famous Ayurvedic practice of drinking water in the morning.  A regular ushapaan helps in keeping the body healthy. It also helps to get rid of many diseases and disorders like headaches, blood pressure, anemia, obesity, arthritis etc.

How much is enough

The color of your urine may indicate whether you are sufficiently hydrated or not. The color of your urine should be fairly clear and straw colored. Dark yellow urine may indicate a sign of dehydration. Dry chapped lips may also indicate the lack of sufficient water being supplied to your body. Drinking water this way can stimulate weight loss. Quite often people confuse the desire for hydration with being hungry, eating a snack rather than drinking water.
